Platón es, sin duda, un pensador de primera grandeza que ha contribuido como pocos a la configuración de la cultura occidental. Muchas de sus imágenes, alegorías y mitos forman parte del patrimonio literario y cultural de nuestro mundo; sus diálogos continúan vivos y, más allá de las previsiones que el mismo Platón pudiera haber formulado, continúan sirviendo a la formación intelectual de las nuevas generaciones y siguen alimentando el pensamiento actual.

Durante el siglo III, en ambiente alejandrino, se forjó el neoplatonismo, cuyo representante más significativo es, sin duda, Plotino. En la génesis del pensamiento neoplatónico intervinieron diferentes factores de orden histórico y el influjo de diversas corrientes del pensamiento helénico, cuya exacta contribución no es fácil determinar. Es indudable, sin embargo, que la filosofía de Plotino constituye el paradigma del posterior neoplatonismo pagano y un importante punto de referencia para el primer pensamiento cristiano, que marcará el camino del sucesivo pensamiento medieval. Porfirio (234-305 d.C.) fue un filósofo muy apreciado por sus contemporáneos, y no sólo por su grande erudición, sino por su propia especulación metafísica. Además del pensamiento de Plotino, conoció en profundidad el de Platón y Aristóteles-es el primer filósofo que comenta extensamente a los dos-, así como el de otros pensadores platónicos de los dos primeros siglos, y supo elaborar un propio sistema filosófico, distinto en algunos puntos importantes del de su maestro Plotino. Porfirio fue, además, un pensador profundamente religioso, que quiso defender la religión tradicional greco-romana, oponiéndose para ello con vigor al cristianismo entonces en gran expansión, y sin miedo, en cambio, a acoger las novedades de religiones orientales y de Egipto que no contradecían su visión filosófica. La imagen de Porfirio como un pensador de grande erudición, pero de poca profundidad especulativa, como un simple comentador y buen discípulo de Plotino, hoy día no se considera apropiada. Los estudios actuales sobre Porfirio tienden a valorar la originalidad de su pensamiento, la valentía de su proyecto intelectual y la importancia de su influjo en la filosofía sucesiva, también en ámbito cristiano. Intentar exponer qué entiende hoy día el mundo filosófico por estética es una tarea muy complicada, hasta el punto de poder afirmar que "nadie, hoy, se atrevería a dar una definición no problemática de la estética" [Restaino 1991: 21]. Comprender tal complejidad requiere conocer el origen de esta disciplina y su sucesiva historia. La estética, como disciplina filosófica específica, es uno de los productos más propios del pensamiento moderno. Su origen, en efecto, se atribuye a Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten quien en 1750 publicó su Aesthetica con la intención de reconducir al ámbito del saber científico el conocimiento sensible-la palabra griega aisthesis significa sensación o percepción-, incluida la percepción de la belleza. Sin embargo, quizá sea más cercano a la verdad atribuir a Kant el nacimiento de la nueva disciplina y la importancia que la filosofía sucesiva le atribuyó. Con Kant la estética cobra particular relevancia, convirtiéndose en una especie de sucedáneo de la metafísica presuntamente superada. Su objeto de estudio comenzó siendo la belleza, con particular atención a la belleza natural, pero ya con el romanticismo fue reemplazado por el arte; de este modo la estética se convirtió en filosofía del arte. Obviamente tanto la belleza como el arte habían sido objeto de reflexión por parte de la tradición filosófica anterior, pero a partir de una perspectiva distinta, metafísica, y sin pretender que su estudio constituyera una peculiar disciplina filosófica. Esta breve descripción del nacimiento de la estética permite comprender la dificultad de dar una definición suya que pueda ser fácilmente compartida; de algún modo, el significado que cada filósofo atribuye a la belleza y al arte se corresponde con su personal visión de la realidad, con su personal sistema filosófico. Por este motivo dedicaremos un primer apartado a recorrer sintéticamente la historia de la estética, deteniéndonos en algunos de los filósofos y de las corrientes de pensamiento que se consideran más relevantes para esta disciplina: Kant, el romanticismo, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger y el pensamiento postmoderno. Para evitar obligar al lector a recordar cosas que quizá ya sepa, propondremos de modo sintético este recorrido histórico en la primera sección de la voz. Sin embargo, para quien pueda estar interesado, se ofrece a modo de apéndice una exposición más detallada de la génesis de la estética y de la moderna filosofía del arte. Sucesivamente señalaremos los problemas principales con los que se enfrenta la actual filosofía del arte. Finalmente indicaremos algunas tesis de la que podría ser una propuesta alternativa, una filosofía de la belleza que en puntos importantes se separa de las premisas sobre las que se apoya el pensamiento estético moderno. The article attempts to answer the question raised by Aristotle in NE I, 4 1096 b 26 by presenting, in a synthetic way, the meaning and scope of homonymy in Aristotle’s thought. The categorial argument deployed by Aristotle to criticize Plato’s position regarding the good is subsequently analyzed. However, that argument does not lead to affirm conclusively the real homonymy of the good, as Aristotle himself seems to admit. The fact that the good appears in diverse domains of reality does not assure its polivocity, which is a necessary condition for homonymy. Besides, the article points out the meaning of analogy with regards to the good. Next, it analyzes the argument that seems to be critical to assure the polivocity of the good and its relative homonymy, the argument in which the distinction between the good in itself and the good for the sake of another good is grounded. Thus admitted the relative homonymy of the good—without excluding its analogical relationship—, the article attempts to understand the real answer—not indicated by Aristotle—to the question regarding the way in which the good is predicated; the answer, which is circumscribed to the practical sphere, would be that only for the virtuous person is the good a homonym reality related to a first good, happiness.

One of man's strongest passions is his natural inclination to search for truth. This inclination, which does not place extrinsic limits on knowing itself, could be described as a person's original intentional relationship with reality as a whole.

As scientific knowledge is a particular manifestation of this natural tendency to search for truth, a scientist moved by this passion stays open; indeed, he feels the need to continue searching, without establishing a priori boundaries on this natural outlet.

One can consider this together with the input which enlivens the scientific task - that is, that the researcher lets himself be "moved" by what the facts and results of his work present, without closing himself off to other fields and without thinking that natural science is the only form of knowledge. Scientific activity done with this approach shows itself to be capable of leading man to the fundamental aspects of natural reality, and of accompanying him in his openness toward transcendence. Ultimately separated from philosophy in practice and declared self-sufficient, science has been a factor of dehumanization. At the same time, philosophy, distancing itself from scientific knowledge and refusing to enter into dialogue with it, has lost vitality.

The work of Niels Stensen, a Danish scientist from the 17th century and a pioneer in several areas of experimental knowledge, offers a paradigmatic example of scientific work that maintains a vital relationship with philosophy and with faith, without forsaking the legitimate exigencies of methodological autonomy.

La comunicazione si prefigge di mettere in risalto alcuni aspetti dell’esortazione ascetica ambrosiana studiando la presenza delle affermazioni paoline sul tempo contenute in 1Cor 7, 29-31 (“tempus breve est... praeterit enim figura huius mundi”) nel breve trattato De Fuga Saeculi di Ambrogio di Milano. Il pastore milanese invita a considerare la fugacità del tempo umano e la necessità di ancorarsi alla stabilità che offre la fede in Cristo.

The lazy reason asserts that there is only one possibility: the one that actually exists. Leibniz exposes it in a way that
identifies God’s choice of the best possible world with the acceptation of the metaphysical necessity of reality. The
problem of necessity is at the root of this argument, with an analysis that ranges from purely logical to the highest
metaphysical speculation. The starting point for the reasoning is the analysis of Cartesian concept of “clear and
distinct”. The second step is the identification of it with no-contradiction. The link of this fundamental concept to
reality points to the possibility of metaphysical correlation through the actual definition of the possible: is supposed a
metaphysical interpretation that is disassociated from the mental operations. The centrality of the possibility is not the
answer to the last question posed by the lazy reason: only the necessity can provide a solution, constituting as a key to
undersand the possible.
